Give my regards to Broadway... via the Golden Gate

The theater world is abuzz with the San Francisco debut of this show takes to the stage prior to its move to Broadway. Meet Doug Petty, busy session / touring musician from LA

Receptor user Doug Petty got on the Receptor bandwagon very early on, having picked up his first Receptor for use with Tears for Fears. We managed to catch up with Doug on TFF's swing through the Bay Area where he told us a bit about his past.

Bryan (Muse Research): For the people who may not be so familiar with your accomplishments, can you give us a little brief background about when you started playing, maybe your early influences?

Doug: I started playing very early- when I was about 8 years old - and played mostly classical early on. Then I got very interested in playing rock, so I got into rock bands in my teens and then later I discovered jazz.

Bryan: You spent a lot of time in New York, studying music there, right? What a great place to learn about jazz...

Doug: Yeah, I started getting into jazz around high school. I went to college and majored in piano performance at Eastman School of Music. I studied jazz there but was a primarily a classical music major. Then, right after college I moved to New York City – around 1990 - and got more involved in the studio side of music making. I had the opportunity to work with a lot of different artists and made a lot of rock records.

Bryan: Was there any particular rock bands that inspired you initially?

Doug: Coming up I was really into guys like Keith Emerson from ELP, and Rick Wakeman from YES, you know, kind of the usual suspects (laughs). I got away from that scene when I was in college, but as a younger kid I was very much into that stuff. Then I discovered jazz and got really, really into Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett - that whole thing.

Bryan: If you could be any jazz artist, who would you want to be?

Doug: Oh man... that's really hard to say, I think probably Bill Evans is my favorite overall.

Bryan: So how did you get in to touring? Your resume is pretty amazing: you've worked with Joan Osbourne, Britney, Enrique, Shawn Colvin, Backstreet Boys- you've been all over the place. How is this gig kind of different for you than the stuff you've done in the past?

Doug: I've been really fortunate to work with a lot of different artists, some in the studio and some on the road. For example, I've only recorded with Britney and the Backstreet Boys, I didn't actually tour with them.

The gig with Tears for Fears has been really great, the music is really challenging, and the band is great. Its been really fun to be part of a comeback for Curt and Roland, they are really great writers and performers, and they are seasoned veterans, so the gig has been very professional all the way around.

Bryan: Do you prefer playing in sessions or being on tour?

Doug: Life as a touring musician has been great, but right now I'm much more into the studio stuff, I have a new baby at home and with kids its hard to be out on the road. And to be honest, after you do a certain amount of touring it's like, well, you've kind of been there / done that. Being out with Tears For Fears has been great, though, because it's great music and I find it very challenging both on the programming side and on the playing side. You're covering a lot of parts and it really keeps you on your toes, keeps it challenging and interesting.

You know, every gig I've done has been different. For example, touring with Shawn Colvin is very organic. It's acoustic piano, it's Wurlitzer, Hammond B3, and the whole vibe is different since she sets the tone with her acoustic guitar. And that is completely different than being on the road with Enrique Iglesias...

Bryan: You're still working with Shawn Colvin?

Doug: I still work with Shawn, yes. She's unbelievable, she's one of the few artists who can just show up with an acoustic guitar and it's a great performance. Her whole thing is that she's so funny and she's so good - I really enjoy watching her every night, because it's always different - every single night. I can't say enough about her, and she's one of those people who can sing anything.

Shawn could sing the phonebook and make it sound so you just wanna cry. She's one of those rare talents. Working with her is very different than working with Tears For Fears; the music is entirely different. With TFF the music has very specific requirements, I have very specific parts I need to play or it just won't sound right. But with Shawn, the music has a certain organic aspect to it, and things change on a regular basis. Contrast that with playing with Enrique Iglesias where it is all about putting on big production; it's all about the show. And moving from one song to another is a big thing, you, keeping the energy flowing throughout the show.

Bryan: So what's next for you?

Doug: Well, we finish our tour this Fall, and I'll spend some time with the family, and then back into the studio.

Bryan: We'll look forward to more records, more tours, and more sounds from Receptor!

Doug: Absolutely... its a great box, and it solves a bunch of problems for me, especially the problem of taking the sounds used in the studio and taking them on tour. I'm using it for all the piano sounds on this tour, running the Bösendorfer 290 plug-in from East West. It plays a critical role, after all Tears for Fears features a lot of piano parts. It's been great, and I'm looking forward to using it in the studio.


UniWire, Muse Research's exciting new technology that allows you to run plug-ins on your Receptor as if they were actually inside your host computer, is now in BETA. Assuming all goes well, UniWire should be available for public beta around the New Year (Sorry for the delay).
